Besides the five-star competition in Doha, there was also five-star show jumping in the United Arab Emirates last weekend in Abu Dhabi, which kicked off the new season of the Longines League of Nations on Saturday. The five-star competition therefore attracted the most interest, but there was also a two-star competition.
The highlight of this two-star competition was of course the CSI2* Grand Prix, which was already on the programme on Friday afternoon. In it, there was a podium place for home rider Mohamed Shafi Mohamed Alremeithi with the 9-year-old gelding Dowan Vd Vosberg Z, a son of Dominator 2000 Z and Pythagoras bred by Iboya D'Haese. Mohamed Alremeithi and Dowan Vd Vosberg Z were already good for 8th place in the 1.40m class on Wednesday during the opening day and were among the seven combinations that managed to qualify for the jump-off during the CSI2* Grand Prix. As the first combination to reappear in the ring, they once again managed to ensure a flawless round and a finishing time of 42.55 seconds earned them a final 3rd place in the standings.
Also in this CSI2* Grand Prix, Egyptian Amr Gamal Mohamed managed to jump into the spotlight with the 13-year-old stallion Zazou Z, a son of Zandor Z and Guidam bred in the Netherlands by Schoof and Vullers. Gamal Mohamed and Zazou Z, who also finished 4th in the 1.40m class the day before, managed to set the second fastest time in the jump-off in 41.36 seconds, but a mistake on the way unfortunately kept them off the podium and eventually made them settle for 6th place.
Furthermore, there was also a blue/yellow victory within the CSI2* competition classes and Greek rider Dimitri Natsis took care of that with the 8-year-old mare Corrie Z, a breeding product of Dutchman Han Aarts who crossed the blood of Cornet Obolensky with that of Balou du Rouet. Natsis and Corrie Z were the winners of the 1.40m class on Wednesday, where they were a quarter of a second ahead of the competition with a clear2nd phase in 29.43 seconds.
In the CSIO5* competition classes, French rider Alexa Ferrer had a good weekend with the 10-year-old mare Caetlin Vd Heffinck Z, a daughter of Chacco Blue and Cabrio Z born to the Hamerlinck family of Stoeterij van de Heffinck BVBA. During the opening day on Wednesday, Ferrer and Caetlin Vd Heffinck Z started their competition with a 6th place during the 1.50m main class and a day later they confirmed this good form by claiming 3rd place during the 1.45m speed class.
Finally, Belgian rider Wilm Vermeir also managed to jump into the prizes with the 10-year-old grey mare Magic Van 't Hulgenrode Z, the daughter of Midas vh Endhouse and Vigo d'Arsouilles, who was bred by Marcel De Ridder and with whom Vermeir has already performed well several times in recent months. During the 1.50m main class on Wednesday, they managed to keep all the rails in the clear in both the basic round and the jump-off, resulting in a 4th place.
