Under the Spanish sun of Oliva last weekend, we could enjoy the start of a new edition of the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. One of the combinations competing there was German rider Philipp Weishaupt with his 14-year-old gelding Coby 8, a son of our grey stallion Contagio Z and Escudo 19 bred in Germany by Jürger Geffken. Weishaupt and Coby 8 immediately made an excellent start to their tour in Oliva, as after a clear round in the 1.40m class on Friday, they became the winners of the 1.45m Longines Ranking class on Saturday. In a jump-off for which eight combinations managed to qualify, they again kept all the bars in the pooles and with a convincing finishing time of 36.22 seconds, they were almost one and a half seconds ahead of the competition.
Furthermore, with the 16-year-old gelding Cipetto 2, a second Contagio Z offspring managed to jump into the limelight in Oliva. This son of Contagio Z and Contender, bred by Christian Weiss, appeared in the ring under the saddle of Swiss rider Yannick Joran and they managed to add the 1.40m class to their record on Thursday during the opening day.
In that 1.45m Longines Ranking class on Friday, 2nd place went to Belgian rider Koen Verreecke with the 11-year-old mare Halima van het Bonte Hof Z, a daughter of Hos d'O and Heartbreaker bred by Leen Braeckmans. Vereecke and Halima van het Bonte Hof Z also managed a clear jump-off, but with a time of 37.64 seconds they clearly had to beat Weishaupt and his Coby 8.
On Sunday in Oliva, the CSI2* GP was of course the main event and in it Austrian rider Alice Janout managed to claim a top ranking with the 12-year-old gelding Esprit d'Intro Z, a breeding product of Pierre Floru who combined the blood of Elvis Ter Putte with that of Erco van 't Roosakker. Janout and Esprit d'Intro Z were one of the 10 combinations that managed to qualify for the jump-off, in which they managed to secure 6th place after another flawless performance.
Finally, it was also a successful opening week for Belgian rider Constant van Paesschen with the 10-year-old mare Kannavara Z (Kannan x Contender - B: Dave Blyau). They immediately started their competition on Thursday with a 4th place in the 1.45m main class and a day later secured another 9th place in the 1.40m class.
