Last weekend, Wellington International was already into its 4th week of the famous Winter Equestrian Festival and this week some Zangersheide horses managed to impress again. For example, American rider Kent Farrington took the opportunity to start for the first time this year with his 12-year-old top gelding Landon, the son of our chestnut stallion Comilfo Plus Z and Quadrillo who was born as Crack de Nyze Z at breeder Danny Nijs and with whom Farrington formed the best combination in the world in 2023.
Farrington and Landon started with a 'warm-up round' during the CSI4* 1.40m class on Wednesday, yet a day later they managed to provide an immediate performance at the 1.50m WEF Challenge Cup. The successful duo stayed clear in the first round, making them one of 12 combinations to secure a place in the jump-off. In that jump-off too, they ensured a flawless performance and with a finishing time of 37.96 seconds, they were a close second ahead of the competition.
Kent Farrington: "I really like jumping on the grass, I think it is still the best setting for horses in general. The start of the course was quite open, but I tried to keep a normal rhythm and focus mainly on my turns. I think the short turn to obstacle 4 also helped me win this section."
Just like two weeks ago, British rider Amanda Derbyshire also managed to jump to a victory last weekend with the 12-year-old stallion Otto BH, a son of Norton d'Eole and Toulon who was born as No Mercy Van 'T Kamerveld Z at breeders Patteet and Van Ransbeeck. Derbyshire and Otto BH were the winners of the 1.50m speed class on Friday, in which they were more than a full second ahead of the competition with a clear round in 65.01 seconds. Moreover, yesterday during the 1.50m class, Derbyshire and Otto BH confirmed their good form with 9th place. Then a fault in the jump-off kept them from another victory.
Who also managed to jump into the limelight again during this 1.50m class yesterday was American rider Lillie Keenan with her 13-year-old stallion Agana van het Gerendal Z, the son of our chestnut stallion Aganix du Seigneur Z and Topas, who was bred in the Netherlands by the Verhey family of Stal Gerendal and with whom Keenan finished 4th at the CSI3* GP two weeks ago. Keenana and Agana van het Gerendal Z did manage to keep all the poles in the scoops during the jump-off and this performance was good for 5th place in the standings.
Besides the CSI4* GP, the past few days in Wellington have also seen another two-star competition and at yesterday's CSI2* GP, British rider Jessica Mendoza managed to jump to a top 10 ranking with the 9-year-old stallion Summerhouse, a son of Guidam Sohn and Indoctro who was born at his Dutch breeder C. den Boer as Guidam Sohn The Second Z. In a jump-off for which 11 combinations managed to qualify, Mendoza and Summerhouse again kept it clear, giving them 6th place in the standings.
Finally, the past few days there was also a podium place for American rider Nicholas Dello Joio with the 10-year-old gelding Dylano van de Heide Z (Denzel van 't Meulenhof x Feinschnitt I van de Richter - B: Domien Wouters). During the 1.45m Longines Ranking Test on Friday, they kept nicely clear in both the basic round and the jump-off, which was good for 2nd place in the standings.
