Following last week's Madrid Horse Week, another Longines FEI Jumping World Cup was scheduled on Spanish soil last weekend and more specifically at Casas Novas in La Coruña. Out of the 40 combinations that made their appearance in the ring on Sunday evening, 14 managed to get through the basic round held by Olympic track builder Santiago Varela and his team unscathed, securing a ticket for the jump-off. One of those 14 was German Philipp Weishaupt and the 14-year-old gelding Coby 8, a son of our grey stallion Contagio Z and Escudo I bred in Germany by Jürgen Geffken. Weishaupt and Coby 8 reappeared in the ring as the twelfth combination and with a fantastic round in 36.11 seconds they managed to write this seventh leg of the season on their record!
Philipp Weishaupt: "This was only my first big five-star victory of the season and as it was also my last competition of the year, it was also my last chance. I am extremely happy with Coby, what a fighter he is! In the first round I had to work pretty hard, but in the jump-off he knows exactly what to do. It's so much fun to ride him in a jump-off, because he's really fast. I think everyone else also knows how fast Coby is. He has been a great horse for me for seven to eight years and has been hugely successful. To be honest, I hadn't planned to compete in the World Cups this year. I came to La Coruña because this is one of my favourite competitions. I love being here; Coby is always in top form here - he won the Grand Prix here two years ago. I just love this show."
After their 3rd place in Madrid last week, Dutchman Maikel van der Vleuten and his also 14-year-old gelding Beauville Z N.O.P. (Bustique x Jumpy des Fontaines - B: Pascal Habets) also managed to qualify for the jump-off again in the La Coruña World Cup. In it, they also managed a particularly sharp finishing time in 36.80 seconds, but a jumping fault on the exit of the double jump unfortunately kept them from another podium place and made them settle for 9th place this time.
Another notable combination was Frenchman Simon Delestre with the 11-year-old black gelding Dexter Fontenis Z, a son of Diarado and Voltaire bred by S-Ky Horses S.C.R.I. Delestre and Dexter Fontenis Z got off to an excellent start on Friday with a 3rd place in the 1.50m speed class, and then a day later they managed to secure another 9th place in the 1.55m main class. Then they were one of 16 combinations who managed to advance to the jump-off.
During that 1.55m class on Saturday, Frenchwoman Lara Tryba was also one of the prize winners with the 12-year-old gelding Memphis Z, a son of Mylord Carthago and Candillo from the breeding farm of Freek Hoogenboom. In both the basic round and the jump-off, they produced a flawless performance, finishing in 6th place.
