After the particularly exciting denouement of the Longines Global Champions Tour in Riyadh last week, the West European League jumped for World Cup points again last weekend. For this sixth leg of the season, they headed to the Spanish capital Madrid over the past few days for another edition of Madrid Horse Week.
Consequently, the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup on Sunday afternoon there was the absolute highlight of the weekend and in it there was a podium place for Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten and his 14-year-old top horse Beauville Z N.O.P., the son of Bustique and Jumpy des Fontaines from the breeding farm of Pascal Habets. Van der Vleuten and Beauville Z N.O.P., also good for 7th place in the 1.50m class on Friday, were one of the 13 combinations that managed to brave the basic round of the Spanish cours builder Javier Trenor without any problems, securing a place in the jump-off. In that jump-off, the bronze medallists from the Paris Olympics managed to repeat that flawless performance once again and with a finishing time of 41.48 seconds, they eventually secured 3rd place.
Also qualifying for the jump-off of this World Cup were Spanish rider Mariano Martinez Bastida and the 15-year-old gelding Belano Vd Wijnhoeve Z, a son of Berlin and Darco bred by Danny De Cuyper. They saw a fault in that decisive jump-off, but still gathered World Cup points with 8th place.
On Saturday afternoon, Austrian rider Alessandra Reich then managed to jump into the limelight with the 8-year-old mare Galadermie Pp Z, a breeding product of Stal Poppelaars in the Netherlands who combined the blood of George Z with that of Canturo. During the 1.45m speed class, Reich and Galadermie Pp Z kept all the bars neatly in the reels and resulted in a great2nd place.
Finally Belgian rider Pieter Devos also managed to get another great result with the 10-year-old chestnut mare Jarina J, the daughter of our grey stallion Cicero Z with whom he won a class at the World Cup in Stuttgart a fortnight ago. During the 1.45m class on Friday, Devos and Jarina J did not have a single fault and this performance earned them a 4th place in the standings this time.
